Omega 3 Oils And Their Benefits

by Michael Byrd

Omega-3 fatty acids (also known as n-3 fatty acids) are chemical compounds that naturally occur in some fats and oils. As one of the "essential" fatty acids, Omega-3 oils are required for normal growth, but they also provide a wealth of other benefits.

Some of the health benefits of Omega 3 oils are that they help reduce cholesterol, the risk of thrombotic stroke and heart disease, improve activity in the immune system, and lower blood pressure while blood circulation is being stimulated. Though there isn't any scientific evidence to back it up, Omega 3s have long been considered "brain food" and is sometimes associated with aiding in the treatment of schizophrenia.

Although eggs and walnuts are also source of omega 3 oils but fish is renowned one. Mackerel, sardines, anchovies, salmon, and herring, besides tuna to a slighter quantity have major supply of fish oil, which contains the seven times strong omega 3 oil than the other kinds of fish

Despite of the well documented benefits of omega 3 oils and its consuming through fish, the Food and Drug Administration has recently warned about oily fish poisoned with heavy metal, which is also used to produce omega-3 oils. In cold-water fish dangerous heavy metals such as arsenic lead, nickel, mercury and cadmium could accumulate. Therefore it is really important that you know your source of fish or omega 3 oils.

A potential major advantage of taking omega-3 fish oils is a measure of migraine relief. As previously discussed, these fatty acids lower blood pressure and therefore simultaneously increase circulation. Since a reduction in the cerebral blood flow forces a rapid widening of blood vessels and concomitant leaking and swelling, this results in the terrible headache pains. Ingestion of omega-3 oils has been tied to a lessening of the likelihood that this will occur since it encourages improvement in the rate of blood flow.

The increased circulation brought on by the intake of omega-3 oils also has other beneficial effects, particularly in the heart. Regular consumption of omega-3 oils reduces blood triglyceride levels, in turn reducing the risk of heart attack. In addition, omega-3 oils break down a compound known as fibrin which is involved in forming clots and scar tissue, reducing the risk of clotting that could lead to a stroke or infarction.

Some of the health benefits of Omega 3 fatty acids are that they help reduce cholesterol, improve activity in the immune system, and lower blood pressure. The oil of fish such as salmon, sardines and herring, are some of the main sources of these fatty acids. A reduction in blood pressure and a consequent improvement in circulation of the blood is one of the many effects of this fatty acid. This may explain the effects of fish oil in migraine relief, since the pain experienced by headache sufferers is caused by dilation of blood vessels, which is triggered by reduced blood flow in the brain.
